Compilations and Reviews – Financial Statement Engagements

We perform Compilation and Review engagements which are typically used for lending, investing or bonding activities. Both reports include a signed accountants report followed by the financial statements (balance sheet, income statements, statement of cash flows). There are distinct differences between the two, most notably the level of assurance provided.

A Review provides limited assurance and the accountant’s report will use the following language. We are not aware of any material modifications for the financial statements to be in conformity with the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Reviewed financial statements must include all required footnotes and other disclosures. The process involves testing ratios, applying other analytical tests, making inquiries of management, etc.

A compilation provides no assurance and the accountant’s report explicitly states this and that the financials are the representations of management. Compilations don’t require inquiries of management or analytical procedures. Instead, we rely on our knowledge of accounting principles and a general understanding of your business and we consider whether the financial statements appear appropriate in form and are free from obvious material misstatements. A Compilation Report will be issued with the financial statements explicitly stating our role. Banks often require compilations from an independent CPA as part of their lending covenants.
